How To Start A Dirt Bike

In this video, professional dirt bike rider Ryan will show you the only correct way of kick-starting a dirt bike.

How to start a dirt bike. This is a four-stroke motorcycle, and so there's an absolute definitive way of starting it right. First of all, we do not have an electric start, we have a kick-start.

Good old-fashioned way of starting a bike, but it keeps the weight down. There's no battery, no starter motor, we just have the kick-start here. Now, the best way to start these four-stroke motorcycles is you need to get a good kick.

You need to get your foot on that kick-start. First of all, you need to turn the bike around, the engine around, make sure you get the piston up to top dead centre of the engine, so that it's ready to start. By this, you're just turning the engine over slightly until you feel it go hard, and you go just past top dead centre.

Now, we don't actually need to give it a big handful of throttle, all we need is a good hard kick. Now, once you've started the bike and you've got it running, you're ready to ride. So, just do that again.

We'll just kick the bike over, get the piston past top dead centre, which is at the very top of the engine, which it should be now, almost, the kick-start's gone hard. Bring it up to the top, no throttle at all, and kick it really hard. And that's how to start a dirt bike. .
