Use nail scissors frequently to keep the fingernails short. Have scissors on hand wherever you do your work. If you find that you are biting a corner of a nail, cut that corner off with scissors. If you must bite, snip with your teeth instead of tearing.

What finally worked for me was to use a nail polisher every day. I bought one to make the nails strong and I put it on everyday. It is clear, so even if it smudges, it doesn't matter. It takes less than one minute to put it on. The polish makes my nail harder and they look better. Now, I just don't feel like bitting my pretty nails. It has been almost 3 weeks that I haven't bitten them at all. It is also useful to file them as soon as it has an imperfection, so that you don't feel like fixing the problem with your mouth, per se.

I automatically stopped biting my nails when I had to have my teeth out after contracing Cushings' Syndrome! My teeth had been falling to pieces, my skin was extremely itchy, and I had bitten my nails whenever they grew to stop scratching myself to bits. I am now the proud owner of beautiful long strong nails and have had my first professional manicure. I am 55. I wouldn't recommend having your teeth out just to stop biting your nails . . . but it worked for me!!

What do you do if you really bite your nails?The guy in this video does not have a problem.I don't own finger nails at all.There is only pink tissue where my nails once where.I have bitten them since I was 4 years old they don't even bleed anymore.I have had acrilic nails before but green mold grows under them because my nails don't even grow to my skin anymore .When my nails grow out they are white. Anon has never seen a rolley before? It is very common in most parts of the world to make your own ciggarettes with papers/tobacco. I am 63 and have bitten my nails ~ off & on ~ since I stopped sucking my thumb (later than normal). Later in life, I also smoked off & on, with & without biting my nails. I know I have chronic anxiety, and I think it presents in oral fixations ~ such as overeating, in addition to above. May also be a form of O-C Disorder. See a doctor re stress, OCD, poor self-esteem or any similar issues. I have tried numerous ways to stop over the years. BEWARE of the foul-tasting deterrents! They are often hard to wash off. If you eat a sandwich, etc., with your hands, the deterrent will ruin your meal. Polish/nail strengtheners usually work well for me ~ I just wish they were made in a "matt" finish. Shiny polish just draws attention to the bitten nail, IMO.
