Stopping on ice skates is the most important thing to learn in the beginning. Learn two ways to stop gracefully and slowly, the snow plough stop and the "T" position stop and quit crashing or falling down to stop.
Okay, once you've learned how to stop smooth on the ice, it's obviously very important how to stop in ways that aren't necessarily crashing into the barrier or falling on your bum. Okay, so we're going to learn how in this particular section. Two ways of basic stops are snow plough stops, which you can similarize to being on skis on the snow, and then you've got the "T" stop, which is actually forming a "T" position with your feet and coming to a halt at a nice easy pace.
It's not a case of when you're driving doing an emergency stop and you have to stop immediately. So I'm going to demonstrate a couple of those techniques. On the snow plough stop it's very important to insure that you have your knees bent first, prior to actually turning your heels out and toes in, keeping your weight on the inside of the blades, okay? That's going to form a slow nice progressive stop.
If you have a look at my feet, that's the position you want to be in to come stopping. Okay, so we're going to build up a little bit of speed first, you then place your feet parallel on the ice. Bend your knees.
You can bring your arms out onto your knees, and slowly pushing your heels out, toes in, and come to a stop. I'll demonstrate it again, picking up a little bit more speed this time. As I said feet parallel, bend your knees, heels out, toes in and you can see you slide to a stop.
Okay so the second stop we're going to do is actually a "T" stop. As we've mentioned before, it's basically insuring that you come to a slow stop with your feet in the "T" position. You generally want to use your right leg as the foot that's behind creating that "T" position, so the instep of your right leg is going to be coming to the heel of your left leg.
Again, picking up a little bit of speed, you're then going to put your right foot behind in the "T" position, dragging the inside of the right foot, instep to heel coming to a stop. Remember to keep your arms in front of your body at all times. It's very very important.
What you don't want to do is to lean back on the blades. Hold. Turn the right foot out and come to a slow nicely easy stop.
Okay in this section you learned how to stop two basic ways, again snow plough and "T" stop. Now again you go in a little bit, hopefully you will prevent any crashing into the barriers now, remembering on the snow plough stop make sure your knees are bent first of all, then you can put the pressure, turning the heels out, toes in. "T" stop making sure that you maintain that position, squeeze your thighs together, making sure that you stop fully in the "T" position, with the instep of the right foot coming to the left foot.
And that's how to stop on ice-skates. .
