Top Tips

  • You need to act quickly to establish whether this is mild choking, where you may still have a effective cough, or whether it is a severe case of choking, where the cough may be ineffective or the person might not be able to breathe.
  • In people over the age of one year, begin by administering five back blows. If this is not effective, you can administer the Heimlich manoeuvre.
  • In children under the age of 1 year, lay the child face downwards on the arm and deliver five back slaps. If that does not work administer chest thrusts.
