How To Stop Your Feet From Smelling Badly
This video is a helpful tutorial about how to treat smelly feet with astringents such as witch hazel or surgical spirit. Recorded by a practicing podiatrist.
Hello, I'm Charles Goldman, a qualified chiropodist podiatrist, I run the foot pad, chiropody and podiatry therapy clinic in Holborn, Central London. And today, I'm going to talk to you about various foot problems and their treatment. In this film, we're going to discuss the treatment of smelly feet.
First of all, we're going to have to understand what causes smelly feet. Often, it follows a bout of athlete's foot, but generally, the smell is caused by bacteria that live on the surface of the skin. We all sweat, somewhat, and with excessive sweating, you produce a lot of protein in the sweat.
The bacteria live off this protein, and it's the waste products from the bacteria that cause the smell. So the first thing we have to do is to make sure we wash our feet thoroughly and dry them. I would recommend avoiding using talcum powder, as this keeps the feet dry but absorbs the sweat.
The sweat then stays in the talcum powder, and bits of skin and protein are in the talcum powder, and they act as a culture for these bacteria to grow on, and it doesn't really cure the problem. The first thing to do is if you sweat excessively is to use an astringent. Surgical spirit is very good, but it doesn't smell very pleasant to some people.
You can use witch hazel, which is a marvelous astringent, helps close the pores and stops the excessive sweating. And foot treatments, sprays you can buy over the counter, which are bactericides, can help kill the surface bacteria. If you sweat excessively and these methods haven't helped, you can try taking an extra pair of socks with you and changing your socks during the day, and applying a small swab of witch hazel to your feet.
This will help close the pores and help stop the excessive sweating. If the symptoms persist, it's advisable to seek medical advice. This can be helped by surgical intervention if it is really bad, but that is a last resort.
You can destroy nerves in the back, which prevent you sweating. This is obviously a last resort, and I wouldn't recommend it unless every other avenue has been explored first. This is the way we recommend you treat smelly feet. .
