How To Store Fresh Herbs
Learn how to safely store your excess crop of fresh herbs by watching this brief instructional video by a specialist in indoor gardening.
Hi. My name's John from Growing Life, London, UK urban and indoor gardening specialists, and today we're going to talk about how to store herbs. Fresh herbs are best stored dry, so once we've harvested, we want to dry our herbs as soon as possible.
The faster that we can do this, the less growth there'll be and spoilage of microorganisms. Now, the fastest and most efficient way to dry our fresh harvested herbs is in a food dehydrator such as this, which is set for, conveniently made with, a herb setting of 35 degrees Celsius. The drying time will vary from herb to herb, but once it's dried and crumbled, and brittle to the touch, we can think about transferring it to our storage containers.
Here, we have two different types of storage container, one being Bormioli preserving jars from Italy, and the second being these heat sealed pouches which come in various sizes, which allow us to make the pouch the size we want. They're simply sealed in this case with a gentle press of an iron. Once we've got it into a container such as these, they need to be stored in a cool place.
If you're using glass preserving jars such as this, it is important with herbs that they stay in a dark place. If they're to be left out, then they should be replaced into a plastic bag, as exposure of sunlight or light to your harvested dried herbs will deteriorate the quality. My name's John from Growing Life, London, and that was a brief introduction on how to store fresh herbs. .
