Hi! I'm Stuart Thomas, I'm here at Roller City and I'm going to teach you how to roller skate. I'm going to talk to you about street skating. Street skating is slightly different from rink skating, you obviously go the elements against you like slippery paths, wet roads and other people as well.
With street skating you will find lots of street skaters don't actually have any stoppers, as on concrete they wear down very fast if your skating so a lot of them take the stoppers of which is a little bit dangerous because you need to know how to stop. Using the hockey stop and the T-stop is probably the best way of stopping on the street. If you use your stoppers you might wear them out very fast.
When your street skating the things you should look out for are also uneven pavement, it's very easy to hit a pavement slab and fall straight over. Most street skaters will skate with one foot in front of the other slightly lifting the front of the toe so if they hit a pavement slab that's uneven they bring their front foot they know that there is a bit of an obstacle to lift the second foot up. When you're street skating it's important to look at everybody around you because a lot of paths are uneven a lot of people choose to skate in parks, like Hyde Park.
There's a very big skating community there on most Sundays where there's good weather. Nice wide pathways, nice and flat, nice and even. When skating in park your dealing with a concrete floor, it's a lot harder to fall down on a concrete floor than it is on a rink.
It's going to hurt a lot more so put a lot of padding on. Wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, and if you can a helmet. If you fall down its going to hurt.
When you street skate it's important to keep checking your skates every time because you're going to pick up a lot of dirt and grime off the roads. All you need to do is to get a little bit of a rag over, get as much dirt as possible because you might get dry bearings and then your bearings will go of your skates when you're out on the streets. The last thing you want to do when you're skating in a nice park and one of your bearings go.
It's not great and it's not fun and your wheels could fall off. It's always a good idea to take your shoes with you, worst case scenario is your out skating somewhere nice and your skates break or you fall off your skates and break them. So it's good to take your shoes with you, because you never know if your skates break you're going to walk home.
So that's safety pads, skate in the right areas, look out for lumps and bumps in the roads especially slippery surfaces, make sure you take your shoes with you in case your skates do break. And that's how to street skate.
