Hi, I'm Jamie Crittall from Beech House Veterinary Centre in Surrey, and I'm here to talk to you about dog breeding. How to supervise dogs mating. Now, as an owner of a bitch, classically you will take your bitch to a stud dog, and it's then the experience of the stud dog owner who takes control, and often the stud dog owner will ask you to put a muzzle on your bitch, not because she's aggressive in any way, but occasionally during the active mating, she may just turn around and nip the stud dog; we don't want this to happen.

Often, they'll meet and you will hold your bitch, and the stud dog owner will bring the male dog up and he will mount if she's ready, and then if a good successful mating happens, they tie, and they end up being tail to tail. This may last fifteen to thirty minutes, and occasionally it will last an hour, and at this stage, it's really, really important that you reassure and keep your bitch calm, particularly if it's the first time she's ever been mated, she'd be thinking, "What on earth is going on?" So, lots of encouragement, lots of praise and keeping her calm, and hopefully, you'll end up having a very successful mating and puppies at the end of the day. Normally, you'd take your bitch to the stud dog to be mated, but sometimes under sort of mutual agreement, you can have the mating take place somewhere else, but under kennel club rules, you cannot do it during a kennel club show or event.

That's an absolute no-no, and a reputable stud dog owner will know that, so never go for that. But the most important thing about dog's mating is, of course, getting the right timing and your veterinary surgeon can certainly help you determine when the best time for that to be is. And that's my quick guide to supervising mating.
