How To Tame A Budgie

Have you always wanted to know how to tame your pet budgie? Birds can be quite fearful and difficult to handle. Here is a short three-step video showing you how you can tame your own pet budgie!

Now, this is quite a long process and it won't take overnight. Firstly, the budgie has to build up the confidence with you. And obviously, the bird has to build up some trust with you first.

So, it's best to start hand feeding the bird first of all, with treats or greens like fruit or vegetables is great, to start getting him used to you. Obviously, before you even think about opening the cage, make sure the doors, the windows and any open fires are closed or turned off. Obviously, you want to make sure your environment is hazard free for the bird.

Step 1: Once the budgie is nice and confident and feeding from your hand, place a perch inside the cage. Now, the bird will flutter around to start off with because he will be really scared. Keep doing this every day until he's nice and confident with the perch inside the cage.

Once he's nice and confident, you can slowly, gently put it just underneath his tummy and eventually he will put his feet onto the perch. Keep doing that for a couple of days. Once he's used to the perch inside of the cage, standing on the perch inside of the cage you can slowly bring the perch outside.

Step 2: Once the bird is nice and confident on the perch, you can slowly move your hand inside of the cage. Now, you really don't want to rush this process, the bird will be really freaked out. You want to make sure you are nice and calm, to obviously make this easier for you and the bird.

Keep doing this every day, putting your hand inside the cage. Until slowly you can put your hand slowly underneath his chest and he will hop onto your finger. Keep doing this everyday to make sure the bird is nice and confident and comfortable on your hand.

Step 3: Once the Budgie is nice and comfortable on your finger, slowly move him outside of the cage. Making sure all the doors and windows are closed. Obviously, make sure the room is hazard free.

He may fly off your finger straight away. Make sure when going to get the bird he will be really scared. So make sure when handling be really gentle and very careful.

Budgies are much happier when kept as pairs or more. Obviously, you won't be able to give your budgie 24-hour care like its playmate will be able to do. The only thing with this, it does make the taming process a lot longer.

But please, have patience with the bird, they will come around. And that's how you tame a budgie! Good luck with your feathered friends! For more information, give us a call or pop into the store. .
