How To Teach A Puppy To Do Tricks
If you have a puppy, training is a must, whether it's just housebreaking or more complicated tricks. Training is a great way to bond and form a lasting relationship with your dog.
How to teach your puppy tricks. Now, the key element here is patience. It's not going to happen overnight and it does take time.
Remember that your dog is not a toy, and it's not a robot. Your dog is not there to perform. The good thing about tricks is that they help to build up your relationship with your dog.
Dogs are really intelligent, and it is great to give them new things to learn. The easiest trick to teach is how to sit. Most of the time, when your puppy wants something, they will run to you and come sit just in front of you.
Every time your dog goes to sit, use the word "sit". They will familiarize that word with that movement. Dogs tend to learn better from hand gestures than from words, so when you use the word "sit," try putting your hand out and moving it downward.
Another great trick - and everyone's favourite - is fetch. Get some sort of rope toy or ball and make sure it's not a choke hazard for your dog. Make sure you have a large area to play in, and make sure there are no other animals, or people with children around.
Simply throw the item, and when they return, reward your dog with a treat. You will find that once they have gotten the toy, they won't want to let it go. Treats are a really good way to encourage your dog to perform those tricks.
Once you've taught your puppy to sit, it doesn't have to stop there. The next trick you can teach them is to lie down. Simply hold the treat just underneath the dog's chest so he can't reach it.
He'll wiggle his bum back to get the treat, and eventually he will be in the lying position. Every time he does do that, say the word "lie," or "lie down" - whichever you prefer. If you can, use some sort of hand gesture.
And as I said earlier, patience is the key to teaching your dog tricks. Not only does it help build up a good relationship with your dog, but it helps them to stay active. I'm sure you have plenty of questions, so either contact your local vet, or give us a call.
