Carolina Massie on 'How to Teach Reading Comprehension' explains the basic points every teacher should take in consideration.

Hi, I am Carolina Massie from Greater London Tutors, and I am going to give you some information on how to teach certain subjects. This is the basic guide on how to teach reading comprehension. The first thing to ask yourself is whether the student is working towards to a particular exam and then get information to whatever is necessary for the student to pass that particular exam.

Make sure you get a lot of exam practice in, find resources online or in the past exam papers that could be useful for the student. Help him identify what different texts are and how they are broken up, whether it is poetry, fiction or non-fiction. It is a good idea to get them a list of literary devices or techniques that they can identify in those texts, for example alliteration, symbolism, personification, the power of three, rhetorical questions etc.

You can ask them to identify whether the particular text is analyzing, commenting, arguing, persuading, entertaining or informing. Two useful tools, in order to identify those are GAP and LIST. GAP (Genre Audience Purpose): What's the genre? Is it a letter? Is it a newspaper article? Is it a literary text? Who is the attended audience? Adults, children or the general public? What's the purpose of this text? Is it to analyze, comment, etc.

? LIST (Language Information Style Tone): Is the language persuasive, informative, and descriptive? Does it address you directly? What's the information and how is the information presented? Is it factual, is it the writer's opinion? What's the style? Is it worthy? Are there lots of pictures, are there bullet points? Is it eye-catching? And what's the tone, is it humorous, serious, sad, angry? Make sure to choose current texts that are suitable for their level as well as literary texts. And there are plenty resources online. It is also useful to use a multi-sensory approach, use as many different aids and tools as you can to make the subject as interesting as possible.
