How To Tell If Your Dog Is Pregnant

This video is all about canine pregnancy. If you're suspicious that your dog might be pregnant, the surest way that you can determine is to take her to the vet. Then, you can care properly for your dog and expect healthy puppies in 9 weeks.

Now, you've had your bitch mated. You're hoping she's going to be pregnant and after 9 weeks or so, you're hoping she's going to produce puppies. But how do you know? After about three weeks, it's the perfect time to take a down-to of that because they can actually have a good examination and have a feel of her tummy and they may be suspicious that she might be pregnant.

And to confirm that, they might do an ultrasound scan and that can be pretty accurate at anything from the 21st day to the 28th day. From 45 days onwards, they can even take an x-ray and you can see the developing skeletons within her tummy. A bitch's pregnancy lasts classically 9 weeks.

It may be 57 days up to 70 days and for the first 3 weeks, you're not really going to notice anything and then from about the 3rd week, you might just start thinking that her tummy is sort of slightly sinking, that she's losing that waistline. Now, if you've actually taken your bitch to be mated, you're hoping that she's going to be pregnant and at that stage, take her to your vet. They can actually have a feel and potentially they'll be able to feel the developing fetuses.

Otherwise, more accurately, they can do an ultrasound and that, they can start form about 21 days up to 28 days and even from about 45 days onwards, they can actually take some x-rays and you can see the developing skeletons within the tummy. Now if you don't know your bitch is pregnant, the two top tips to look out for if you suddenly become suspicious, after about 2 or 3 weeks, her tummy may just slightly become larger and you think, “Oh, she's losing her waistline.” At that stage, it really is worthwhile taking her to the vet because they can often have a feel that this is suspicious and they can do an ultrasound scan at that stage which is a lot more accurate.

In the last 2 to 3 weeks of pregnancy, the mammary glands become much more prominent and occasionally, you'll even see a bit of milk and again, that's possible that she may be pregnant. The only thing that is the confusion within this is the bitch can also suffer from false pregnancies or phantom pregnancies and at exactly the same time, you can also have mammary gland enlargement. So if you're worried, take your bitch down to the vet and they can certainly have a good examination and they can reassure for you.

Unlike people, there isn't any urine test to determine whether your bitch might be pregnant. Similarly, there's no simple blood test either so your vet is definitely your best friend at this stage. After sort of day 21, do take your bitch down to the practice and ask your vet to have a good examination.

They might well be able to feel the developing puppies within her tummy and to confirm that, they might then do an ultrasound scan. Some practices, don't have ultrasound machines. So from about day 45, they can actually take some x-rays and you can see the developing skeletons within the bitch's tummy and at that stage, you can almost even count how many but there's no guarantee.

Once you know that your bitch is pregnant, it's really nice if you contact the stud dog owner because then you can say, “Yes, she has a pup,” and let her know the good news. And hopefully after 9 weeks, she's going to have a really good litter of healthy puppies. .
