How To Throw A Bowl
A handmade pottery bowl is fun to make and is a beautiful gift for a friend or for yourself! Professional potter Ricky Grimes shows you how to make a bowl on an electric wheel.
You Will Need
- 2.5 kg clay
- 1 wooden rib
- 1 needle
- 1 sponge
Place the clay firmly in the centre of the wheel. Pat it to make sure the clay is centered. Take some water on your hands and some on the clay. Squeeze the clay up and down between your hands to release any air bubbles. Form the clay into a squat shape.
Taking your hands one on top of the other, squeeze the clay out and up from the centre, pressing your fingertips down. Do this until the clay has been shaped into a rough bowl shape. Place your left hand inside the bowl and your left thumb on the outside of the bowl. Hold the sponge in your right hand and smooth it around the bottom of the bowl. At the same time, squeeze the clay up and out between the thumb and fingers of your left hand.
Once you are happy with the basic shape, smooth the inner and outer sides with the wooden rib. Do this slowly to ensure the sides aren't too thin and the bowl collapses. When you have smoothed the bowl, shape the base with the bamboo tool, trimming off any excess clay. When you have finished, take the wire and pull it slowly under the base of the bowl to prevent it from sticking to the wheel.
