How To Throw A Spear

Okay, so I'm going to show you how to throw a spear. This here is a hunting spear that I've made myself, steel-tipped, lashed with rawhide. One of the main things to realize is that this is not a javelin; it's not as streamlined as a javelin and the balance point is completely different so it won't travel as far.

This is for hunting, not for distance. What you need to do is find the balance point. Now, the balance point will be a lot further forward because it's got a much weightier head in it.

You can see there, balancing on my finger. That's where you want to hold your spear. It feels lightest in the hand.

If I hold it back there, it feels quite heavy. To the front, here it feels heavy. To the back, on the balance point, is the ideal place to hold it.

There. Now, you want to hold this like it's an oversized pencil, like that, like you're going to draw with it and just grip it so it lies flat in your hand like that. That's my preferred grip.

Some people prefer to do that. But personally, I like holding it that way. Okay, so I've got my spear, holding it on the balance point.

I want to point my left foot at my target. My body, slightly off to the side, because my body will twist as I throw and will add power to the throw. My arm needs to be back and straight, and I like to put my left arm out towards the target as well.

It just helps me aim. And then as I throw it, I'll whip through and whip it on with my fingers. The final part will be my thumb and forefinger which will let go of the spear.

So, find the balance point, back like this, and throw. So, you won't get the distance with a javelin as you will with this, mainly because you don't have a run-up when you're hunting with a spear normally. Because if you're hunting game, the game will run away as it hears you running towards it.
