Hello, I'm Charles Goldman, a qualified chiropodist podiatrist. I run The Foot Pad chiropody and physical therapy clinic in Holborn, Central London. Today, I'm going to talk to you about various foot problems and their treatment.
In this video, we are going to talk about treatment of Achilles tendonitis. First, we need to discuss what Achilles Tendonitis is. When something ends in itis, it means inflammation and Achilles Tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the heel bone.
This is often caused by either a sports injury, excessive strain on the calf muscles, or often in older people if they excessively pro-late and have flat feet, that can cause pressure on the tendon and can cause rupture of the tendon, inflammation of that attachment. The Achilles tendon is the attachment of the calf muscles to the heel bone. This is the tendon that stretches and relaxes when you walk or move the foot up and down, running or walking and it is very very important for locomotion.
The way to treat it is anti-inflammatories, strapping and medical help of course. You need to make sure you don't put more pressure on the tendon and rest is very very important. It's very difficult to rest this day and age, but it is imperative, keep it cool, with an ice pack, strapping, and rest.
There's an acronym R.I.C.
E, rest, ice, compression, and elevation. For these sort of injuries, that is the best treatment. That is the way we would recommend you treat an Achilles tendonitis. .
