How To Treat Acne

Dermatologist Dr Nick Lowe explains the best ways to deal with spots, blackheads and acne.

Step 1: Mild acne

Treat mild acne with creams from your pharmacist which will reduce bacteria growth. Use a combination of acne gel, cleanser and toner.

Step 2: Severe acne

Treat severe acne by visiting your doctor of dermatologist. There are several treatment options available. You may be prescribed lotions containing antibiotics, Retin-A, tazarotenic acid, or retinoic acid. You may also be prescribed oral antibiotics and women may be given the oral contraceptive pill if the acne is thought to be hormone related. Apart from lotions and medication, a dermatologist may recommend non-invasive treatments such as light therapy, microdermabrasion or chemical peels.

Step 3: Stress

Acne may be worsened by stress, so try and reduce it through regular exercise, meditation and relaxation.

Step 4: Heavy creams and make-up

Try and avoid heavy lotions and sunscreens on the face, particularly if you are prone to spots in the summer months. Women should avoid applying heavy make-up which may make your spots or acne worse.
