This video discusses the possible causes of big toe pain and analyzing it first before providing proper treatment.
Hello, I'm Charles Goldman, a qualified chiropodist podiatrist. I run The Foot Pad Chiropody and Physical Therapy clinic in Holborn, Central London. Today, I'm going to talk to you about various foot problems and their treatment.
In this video, we're going to discuss treating big toe pain. The first thing we need to find out is what is the cause, so the questions we have to ask is do you know what instigates it, was it a sports injury, running, tripping, dropping something on your toe. If we find it's a continuous pain, we generally say if it hasn't cleared up after a couple of days with pain relief, then seen medical advice, either a chiropodist or a GP.
If it's caused by a break, then obviously you need to see a general practitioner in a hospital department. If there's obviously a surface wound or laceration or bleeding on the toe, then you need to protect it from infection so the first thing to do is apply a sterile antiseptic dressing until you can seek further advice and help. If it starts exuding pus and something like that, then you have to seek immediate help, either a doctor, chiropodist or any department of a local hospital.
After that, we can then consider what the treatment would be once we can analyze the cause. Once we determine the cause, why it's either a medical injury or a dermatological problem or a sports injury or other sort of injury, then we can determine which treatment to apply and that is really the basis of treating big toe pain. .
