How to treat damaged hair? When working with damaged hair, the most important thing is to think about the condition, beginning right with the shampoo. When we first start, we are working with the shampoo which reconstructs, so choosing something that has low detergent content, something that is very gentle on the hair, something that is designed to protect the hair as much as possible while lightly cleansing and removing dirt and build-up of products, so starting with a gentle moisturizing or reconstructing shampoo is the key to the beginning. After shampooing the hair, I would always work with a mask. This can be used once, twice, even three times a week, depending on the density of the hair and depending on the amount of damage that you are dealing with. The good thing about a mask is it can be used as a leave-in treatment or it can be wrapped up, it can be clipped away, and it can be left for a period of time to really moisturize and condition the hair whilst it soaks in and encourages the curl or the movement or the life to come back into the damaged hair. After working with a mask or on alternating days, I would encourage the use of something like a balm, something that is used as a heavy treatment or something that can be applied to the hair, left for 5 minutes or a few minutes and then rinsed out, something that is designed to put moisture into the hair, that can be used as a really great moisturizing conditioner to get the hair in its best condition as possible. After applying your shampoo, your conditioner, and your treatment, we now come to drying the hair. When drying the hair, it is most important that you use a leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners are designed to avoid damage that is caused through hot tongs, blow dryers, or irons when styling the hair, so a really nice conditioner, a leave-in conditioner that is designed again for the density and texture of the hair, something lighter for finer hair like this, something perhaps heavier for coarser curlier textured hair. Something that is also really important when you do dry the hair is making sure you don't over-dry the hair and place too much stress on the hair, particularly in finer hair that has been chemically treated like this. If you are stretching the hair too much with the brush, pulling on it too much with the irons, you are going to cause a lot of damage, so working as gently and as naturally as possible with damaged hair is really important. Finally, a lot of people overlook the way that the hair got damaged. Obviously, colour is a big cause of damage to hair these days and often, it's colour that is done incorrectly where you must ensure you always seek professional advice, get your colour into condition and to a stage where it is working for your hair texture. Avoid colours that don't work because they are too strong a product to your hair or because your hair's natural texture cannot take such a hair bleach or high lift tint. So, avoid over stressing and over damaging your hair, in the first place, with colour. It's a big key to great conditioned and well treated hair. And that is how I would treat damaged hair.
