Losing hair can be a very worrying experience. This video helps women find out what the patterns of their hair loss mean and what they can do to deal with the problem.
I'm going to talk about how to treat hair loss for women. Step one. Identify the type of hair loss that you have.
Is it generalized thinning all over the hair? Is it baldness in a particular pattern? Or is it patchy hair loss? If it's generalized thinning, this is usually due to something called telogen effluvium. It's a big name for something very common, which is general shedding of the hair that happens following stress, infections, pregnancy. Unfortunately, with telogen effluvium, we just need to be a bit patient.
The hair will take its time and will come back. Give it at least three months and addressing the lifestyle factors is all you need to do. If there's a certain pattern to the baldness, such as thinning specifically from the top of the head, then this is what we call female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia.
That means there's probably a hormonal component to it because we know it's more common after the menopause and also runs in families. You can see your doctor to discuss a possible treatment for that. One of the things that they try is something called minoxidil, which is a cream that you rub onto the bald patches.
Other things might be possible, maybe hormonal treatments. If the hair loss is all over in discreet patches, then it's possible that you've got something called alopecia. That's an auto-immune problem but what it means is that the hair follicles aren't actually damaged so there is a good chance that they will come back.
Step two. Have a look at the lifestyle factors that can affect hair growth. Make sure that your diet's excellent because deficiency in things like iron, zinc, glycine, all of these can cause hair loss.
Eating very well or if you really can't manage it, taking a vitamin supplement, which isn't quite as good, is a possibility. So, just to recap, when you've got hair loss, think about the pattern. Is it generalized? Is it thinning at the top of the head? Or is it patchy? See your doctor for possible treatments and remember that lifestyle factors and eating well are going to be the best things that you can do.
And that's how to manage hair loss in women.
