This video will explain to you the causes of a very painful foot ailment known as Plantar Fasciitis. The video will also explain the treatments available to remedy the problem.
Hello, I'm Charles Goldman, a qualified chiropodist podiatrist. I run The Foot Pad chiropodist and physical therapy clinic in Holborn, Central London. Today I'm going to talk to you about various foot problems and their treatment.
In this video, we are going to discuss the treatment of Plantar Fasciitis. First of all, we will explain what Plantar Fasciitis is. Plantar Fascia is a membrane in the sole of the foot underneath the skin.
It is divided into three bands and these attach to the bottom of the heel bone. This is an impact injury that occurs from walking on hard surfaces. This is an impact injury and it causes swelling of this attachment around the heel bone.
This pressure causes pain and discomfort. Very often it resolves itself after a period of twelve to eighteen months. If it is persistent and causes discomfort, it can be treated in various ways.
The first way is to put a cushion in your shoe and this absorbs a lot of the impact. If this doesn't work, you can seek help from a professional like myself, a chiropodist, and we can use anti-inflammatory treatments such as ultrasound and laser. You can also take anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen which help reduce the inflammation and normally, this will clear up on its own.
Very often this can be associated with a heel spur as well and that can be dealt with surgically. It is also often caused when you have flat feet and causes excessive pressure on this part. Treatment for that would be resolving the flat foot problem by using an orthotic arch support.
This will help prevent the impact being so significant. We can also use massage to reduce the inflammation and reduce the amount of fluid around the area and this will help reduce the amount of pain. This is the way I recommend you treat Plantar Fasciitis. .
