How To Tune A Guitar: Open G

VideoJug user Electro has created a film to show you how to tune a guitar in open G. This is one of the most popular tunings for blues music, so follow the tips on this video and tune your guitar in open G perfectly.

Step 1:

Equipment List

Guitar, Pick (or fingers), and a cheap store bought tuner

Step 2:

Turn on Tuner

Place batteries in your tuner and turn on the power

Step 3:

Tune Your Guitar

Strike each string and use the tuner as a guide while adjusting string tension

Step 4:

Play Guitar

When you strum your guitar without touching the frets, it makes a Major G Chord... now play that guitar!

It would be a whole lot better if you had a video showing how to tune a guitar from the standard to the open G. My tuner (korg GA-30) isn't picking up the G on the 5th string...

Useful, but a couple of mistakes. "Top string" actually means the highest pitched, so the thinnest one. A chord is at least 2 notes so playing the low string on it's own is not a chord. I spent all last night converting my old guitar into a lap steel and when using this video to get it in tune, the high G's tuning peg snapped off, I blame you. To the guy who said not to leave negative comments if not leaving my name: I would but I've never used this site before and can't say for sure if i will again, so not signing up.

keith richards said that "all you need to play any rolling stones song was 5strings, two fingers and one asshole" Those 5strings are contained in an open G tuning MINUS THE TOP D. so GDGBD

keith richards plays in an open G. he had several 5 string guitars made that have the "contained" G major chord- leave off the top D: GDGBD. He said "all it takes to play any Rolling Stones song is 5 strings, two fingers, and one asshole."

This is really just a video showing the notes of Open G Tuning. It's not a tuning i ever use - Stick to Standard Drop D or 1/2 Step down god dammit! Made me laugh a few times. Helpful to newbies i suppose but not for me.

If you can afford a computer to leave a negative comment, you can afford a $5 tuner. Open G is a tuning for slide guitar. It's also a good way to get some new interesting chords for those that are looking to break away from standard tuning. Not to mention the many songs Led Zepplin played in Open G. If you won't leave your name, then don't leave a comment. It's not funny, clever or original. At least this person taught you how to tune in open G. What have you done lately :-)

This is how to tune in "Open G", not how to tune a guitar! It's a variation of standard tuning. You have to assume some knowledge of the guitar user.
