VideoJug presents a short film showing you how to turn off the e-mail notifications in Entourage. Turning off that "ding" can actually get you ahead at work, so VideoJug shows you how.
Step 1: Preferences
Once you've opened Entourage, move the cursor to the top left corner of the screen. On the right, next to the icon of the apple, you'll see the word "Entourage". Click on that. When the menu drops down, click on "Preferences". A box will open up.
Step 2: Notifications
On the box, you'll see a column on the left. On top of the column, you'll see "General Preferences." Underneath it, click on "Notifications".
Step 3: The Need to Know
Entourage tries to get your attention in four different ways when you get a new e-mail. It gives you a "Display Alert", which is basically a small pop-up window that fades away after a few seconds.
It offers to "Animate Icon", which means it will bounce the picture of the Entourage icon on your dock.
It can "Bring application to front", meaning that while you're working on something else, Entourage will rip you out of the program you're working on force you to check your e-mail.
Finally, it offers "New Mail Sound", the ding that you hear. Now, it's your job to decide what kind of notification you want for your e-mail, if any.
Step 4: Kill the Pop-Up
On the right, under Notification, the first option you have is to "Display an alert on my desktop". If you don't want the pop-up window,
click on the box to un-check it.
Step 5: Kill the Bounce-Up
The next option you have is the "Animate Icon" box. If you don't want to see the icon bounce to grab your attention, leave the box unchecked.
Step 6: Kill the Kidnapper
If you don't want the application to kidnap you and force you to check your e-mail while you're in the middle of working on something else, leave this box unchecked.
Step 7: Kill the Sound
Finally, if you don't want to hear the la lah look under the Sounds section on the right. Make sure the box for "New Mail Sound" is unchecked.
