How To Type Special Characters

Today, we are going to teach you how to type special characters using the keyboard. Most people use a keyboard during their every day life, whether it be for internet browsing, word processing, and e-mailing. We're going to teach you how you can use the keyboard to type special characters.

You may want to use these specifically in your job, and rather than learning how to access these in a word processing program, for example, you can rely on using just the keyboard. By pressing the ALT key which is located on the left hand side of the keyboard to the left of the space bar, in conjunction with the numbers on the numeric keypad which is located on the right hand side of the keyboard, you have the ability to type a whole range of different symbols and special characters. Press the Num-Lock key at the top of the numeric keypad.

You should see a light go on to indicate it is active. Now, press and hold down the ALT key, and then type the number three and release the ALT key. You should now see a heart symbol.

So to recap, press the ALT key in conjunction with the number three, and you will see a heart symbol appear. So with the Num-Lock key still on, I will show you now how you can type a sum symbol. Press and hold down the ALT key, and then type one five.

Release the Alt key and you will see a sum symbol appear. Very often, you may want to type a trademark symbol and again, you can use the keyboard to do this easily. With the Num-Lock key on, press and hold down the ALT key and then type zero, one, five, three, release the ALT key and you will see the trademark symbol appear.

There are a whole variety of different characters you can type using your keyboard, with the ALT key in conjunction with the numbers on the numeric keypad, but you will need to remember the numbers for the specific characters.
