A Brazilian jiu jitsu belt is not just some belt. Its colours signify years of training and so this video aims to help you understand beyond the belt structure.
Welcome to How to Understand Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belts. Now, I'm going to tell you a little bit about how the structure is, of Brazilian jiu jitsu belts, and the amount of time and effort that is needed to transition between grades. Now, traditionally, you'll start with a white belt, okay.
This signifies the beginning of your journey. Now, in Brazilian jiu jitsu, there are two ways that you can grade but it takes about two years in between each belt, okay. You can either go through and learn each move like a syllabus, or you can compete and fight against other people to earn your grade.
Okay, it kind of depends on the club that you're in. The next belt after white is blue. So, about two years of training to get you to that belt.
After that, you're looking at purple. So in total, it's around four years training to get to this stage. This is kind of a midway point.
The next belt after that is brown; in total, six years to get to this position here. After that, we have the black belt, okay, the sought-after black belt. Now, on average, it's going to take about eight years to get to this belt here.
Now, that's training 3 or 4 times a week and that's based on the average individual. Everybody learns at different speeds. The junior belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu is slightly different.
We're going to start with the white belt. We're then going to go on to yellow, orange and finally, green. From that point, the student is probably old enough to start the adult syllabus and the adult belts, okay.
