How To Understand Squash Strokes And Lets
Squash can be a complicating and daunting game to learn to play- but it doesn't have to be! Videojug is here to help you avoid embarrassing incidents to insure that at least your etiquette is spot on!
Hi, my names Bob Jaffe, I'm the director of coaching at Dulwich Squash club, in London. I'm going to talk to you about the equipment you're going to need, the etiquette you're going to use on court, and the sort of shots that your going to need to play, and how your going to play them. For strokes, I want you to imagine, that you are my opponent.
I'm about to strike the ball, and as i strike it, I don't hit it properly, I hit it back to me. You are standing right behind me, unable to hit the front wall because of my proximity to you. It is your stroke, so the correct court etiquette is to ask for "Let ball please.
" And this can account for wherever you happen to be on the quart, as close as we are now- or if you move away- to the back of the court wall- you are still prevented from hitting that target area. It is also critical as far as the safety of your opponent, but one thing in squash, that you never want to happen is to be hit either by the ball or the racket. So if there's any chance of that- always hold your shot and ask for a "Let Ball".
Now if you again, are my opponent, I'm about to strike a ball, and you move up to the Tee, or too quickly, where I cant swing my racket, because your too close to me, or i might hit you. Its going to be my point, my stroke.
