Hello, I'm Sarah Lloyd-Hughes from Ginger Training and Coaching, and today I'd like to give you a bite-size coaching technique on personal development. If you would like any more information about my self or my company, please visit go-ginger.com.

Wouldn't it be great if you could flick a switch and unleash your full potential? You could be fully powerful, fully alive, fully happy and fully functioning. Well, a life coach plays the role of that switch in many people's life. But change often takes months rather than just moments as with a switch.

Here are some free techniques to help you release your potential. Step 1, uncover your limiting beliefs. We all have assumptions about what we might and might not be capable of in life.

These are known as limiting beliefs. A limiting belief is actually an expertly constructed excuse for not living to your full potential. Often, because living to your full potential is a scary and different experience, so hunt for your own limiting belief.

What do you assume that you can't do? What role do you normally fall into in a group situation? The answers to these questions will point you towards your limiting beliefs. Now you've uncovered where you're holding yourself back, you need to build the motivation to break out of that cycle. So, step 2 is to ask yourself, what would be different if I could? Assume that you already can do the thing that you limit yourself from, just put any reasons why you can't aside for a moment and focus on the fact that this is possible.

After all, the chances are that somebody in the world has done this thing before you. Get into the mindset of what would be made possible if you could do this thing. For example, if public speaking was your limiting belief, what would being able to speak in public give you? More influence? More excitement in your life or your job? More credibility perhaps? Motivational thoughts are all very good, but now comes the bit of where you take action.

Ask yourself, what would the ‘me who can' advise the ‘me who can't' to do next? Assume that five years from now, you can do the thing that you're stuck on right now. What does that future self advise your current self to do to help you overcome your limitation? What practical things would they suggest you do right now? Using your future self to advise your current self is an excellent method for overcoming your limiting beliefs in a really practical way. It works well because you're unlocking your own limitations by yourself much better than other people giving you advice that you know doesn't really fit with your current situation and therefore, are more likely to ignore.

This is just a very quick explanation of how to use limiting beliefs and your future self. If you liked it, you'd definitely benefit from investigating these ideas more with one of the Ginger coaches. Head on over to Ginger Training and Coaching's website, go-ginger.
