How to choose a calligraphy set? There are a number of sets to choose from. We have dipped pen sets, marker pen sets, fountain pen sets. And in the fountain pen set, you have a huge range to choose from, so we're going to look at just a few pens.

This is a type of pen called a pilot parallel pen. These are very good for large scale work. They are also good for small scale work.

They have beautiful sharp edges which you can pull from. I'm dipping the pen to get the water flowing. I'm also flooding the color so that I can flourish from the end of that pen.

Now, there are two ways to use these pens and this is by far the most interesting. You take the two pens and you can drip feed the color from one into another. Don't do this often because it can ruin your pens.

You end up with variable colors flowing. The next type of pen we'll look at is the marker pen. These are from the manuscript pen company italic marker set and they come in fine, medium, broad, and extra broad.

We'll grab an extra broad because it's big and easy to see. I'm using it at a flat angle to produce and eighth century script called Munchausen. The next set that we'll look at is the beginners calligraphy set.

I'm using a little bit of water to get the ink flowing. It is quite useful when you're using a fountain pen to have a little pad of damp tissue paper to blot the pen on to keep the ink flowing. Because sometimes when you write with it, it just stops.

And that's because the ink dries out because of the atmosphere pulling moisture out of it. The next type of pen would be these two, one of your dip pen sets. These are square edge pens, and these are copper plate pens.

They also include something called a shadow pen. We'll start with the round hand pens. You might want to lick the pen slightly to clear the lacquer off the pen as this assists in getting the ink to flow.

It is not necessary to use a reservoir but you have to be conscious of dipping as you go along. Now, we'll also use the pointed nib. I'm using processed black or you can use designer black which is very good for this kind of product.

Unfortunately, these nibs make quite a lot of noise so if you do not like noise, shy away from them. And that is essentially how to use a calligraphy set. .
