How To Use A Finishing Sander
In this video, Tristan of Custom Carpentry teaches viewers how to properly sand down a wood surface using a random orbit sander as finishing sander.
Now, I'm going to show you how to use a finishing sander. We've already sanded some of this down with a belt sander to get rough stuff down. Then we used a low grit paper on this random orbit sander.
So, now, we're going to use some much finer grades of paper to make it really nice and smooth. The good thing about the random orbit sander, is it's the best sander for finishing because it doesn't just rotate in a circle, it rotates in a circle plus rotates again, in lots of other circles all around it, plus with your movement, it creates lots of sanding in all sorts of different directions, and that's the way to get really nice, one of the ways to get a nice fine surface. Obviously, using fine sandpaper also helps give it a fine surface, but say, if you imagine, just the sander spinning around in circles, you would just have round circular marks, where this one, you have marks all over the place and they kind of sand each other out, if that makes any sense.
So, we're finishing off with a 120 grit, then we'll go onto a 240 and it will make it nice and smooth in the end. So just keep the sander nice and flat. Don't sort of wobble in any kind of directions.
Like this, and go backwards and forwards and then up and down, and make sure that you cover the whole area evenly and just keep track of, in your mind, how you're covering it. So don't concentrate too much on one side. So, here we go.
Now, we just have one more stage to do and go to a finer finish. So we're going to switch to a 240 grade sand paper on, and that will make it super smooth. You can already feel here, it's getting better, but I can definitely feel some grain going on still.
When we finish with this one, it will be really smooth like a mirror. So, here it goes. Okay, so this is how we use a fine finishing sander. .
