An expert in carpentry and furniture making clearly and concisely explains the proper use of a precision spirit level, demonstrating each step in the process.
Today, we're using a spirit level. We've got a short one and a long one. The short one would be useful for tight, small areas, and I've got a really long one, which would be good for long spans.
You can use them either horizontally or vertically, so if you're using a level vertically, like this, you'd put it against a wall, for example. And I'll show you how to use, how to know when it's level, on the bench. It's much easier.
So if you want to know if this piece of wood is level, you can see down here that the bubble isn't in between the two black lines and it needs to be in between the two lines. So, the way to find out the exact level? You could use, if you have them, for example, some spacers. So if you put some space on that side and see how it is, you see it's still a bit off level.
I'll put another one there, and you see that's pretty good. Now, we can see that's pretty good with two eyes, so then the next thing to do is close one eye, and go really close up, and center yourself in between the two lines and make sure that you've got exactly the same space on each side of the bubble. And when you do, you know it's perfect.
You won't be able to do that if you've got your two eyes open because it's a 3D view. You're seeing from different angles, so it's going to be misleading. You need to be exactly in the middle, looking from one point of view.
So that's how to use a spirit level. .
