A rasp is an essential tool in certain DIY projects, especially projects that use plasterboard. Learn how to use a rasp competently and effectively to accomplish your own DIY projects.
Okay, today I'm going to show you how to use a rasp. There are many different types of rasps on the market today. But this is a particular, small rasp, handy to have in the tool kit, especially when doing anything with plasterboard.
What we have, we have a serrated edge here, quite sharp, watch your fingers. And what this does is, as you pull it towards you like so, the plasterboard is cut or shall we say shaved, and the shavings collect in the top of the rasp here. So, best way of showing this, I suppose, is to demonstrate to you how a rasp works when using plasterboard.
If I take this over to the plasterboard, and I'll show you how it's done. For demonstration purposes, we have some plasterboard here. What I'm going to do is just rasp, is I'm going to my plasterboard, flush to the piece of wood that's behind it, what we would call grounds or stud work.
And this is the beauty of using a rasp, is by pulling it down, it's smoothing off the plasterboard. But what it does is it collects in here. So I just give it a shake, and again pull it down towards you.
And what that's doing is it's levelling off the plasterboard. Again, shake it off. Nice motions, like so.
And as you can see, what the rasp has done is it has put the plasterboard flush with the stud work behind. Quite an effective tool. But definitely a must when using plasterboard.
