How To Use A Ratchet Spanner

Today, I'm going to be showing you how to use a ratchet spanner. This is an open ended spanner, and this is a ring spanner. And what's happened is they’ve developed what they call a ratchet spanner.

Now, a ratchet spanner means that you don't have to take the spanner off the nut to make another turn. And the way we do this is we choose the correct ratchet spanner for the nut that we're going to be taking off. So I'm going to be taking the ratchet spanner, the correct size ratchet spanner, to fit this particular nut here, and because I'm un-tightening, I need to turn it anti-clockwise.

So, as you can see, you can hear it click, I'm un-tightening the nut. It is important that we use the correct spanner to the correct nut because what we don't want to do is we don't want to strip the nut. So we want to make sure that we've got a good firm purchase on the nut, as you can see.

So here, using the ratchet spanner, I'm tightening the nut. If I want to un-tighten the nut, I turn the ratchet spanner 180 degrees and un-tighten. I want to tighten again, turn it around.

So you can see that the ratchet spanner, its uses, because on a conventional spanner, I'd have to take it off, and so on and so on. The beauty of these is that you can keep it on the nut. Tighten, or un-tighten.
