How To Use A Storm Kettle

A storm kettle can provide you with hot water, and fire, when camping in bad weather conditions. Also known as a Kelly Kettle, this will provide much needed warmth on wet camping trips.

Step 1:

Fill with water

Fill the outer skin of your storm kettle with water

Step 2:

Fire

Light a fire in the kettles hollow centre, and feed it gradually through the top with twigs, or other fuels.

Step 3:

Pour

When the water boils, pour your drink by lifting on the string at the kettles base.
Enjoy the warmth of the kettles fire. This is ideal in poor weather conditions, when lighting a fire would otherwise be very difficult.

has anyone gotten their hand burned while lifting the kettle off it's base by the handle while the fire is still burning? I read that it's a real possibility.

Try moulding a piece of silver foil over the spout to keep the smoke, dirt and insects out.

i have one and my dad put the cork in when going off to get wood and when he came back the cork was blown out and he was scalded with hot steam and water so never put the cork in!

Why risk an explosion? Always remove the cork!

the plug is useful to keep the bugs out until you get some steam blowing out the spout. I just put mine on so it's BARELY held on there, and once you see steam coming out, knock it off with a stick or it sometimes falls out on its own from the pressure.

There's a close up showing the cork out as he is feeding the fire ready for it to begin to boil. I often place the cork in loosly when using mine as it prevents bits dropping in and insects too which spoils my brew!

Yes, but, according to the instructions, you are never supposed to boil the kettle with the cork in the spout.
