How To Use A Tack Hammer
Don't hurt yourself when building furniture. Richard of Jennings Bramley Furniture demonstrates how using a tack hammer, with its trademark magnetic head, can save you time and your fingers.
Alright, this is a tack hammer. And since it applies to putting in tacks, this is a tack. It's not a nail.
It's a tack. There's a difference. They've got a very flat head, a very flat underside of the head as well, and they've normally got a slightly square body.
They cut. They're very, very sharp. They're used for upholstery.
This is a little model I've made of a stool top or something, and you have your foam and things on there and you want to put the holders down around it nice and evenly. I've just done a few tacks to hold it in place, first of all. This one's got a magnetic head which is a real advantage.
One of the problems with hammering is that you've got to hammer and a nail. This is a normal hammer, that is a normal hammer, and you hit it and you hit your fingers, and this is very small, and you're quite likely to hit your fingers and it hurts. On this one, though, with a magnetic head, when you put it in the middle, it actually stays there and that gives you the advantage.
You don't have to hold the nail or the brad, whatever you're putting in - the tack - while you're doing things. So, you can hold a piece of wood, hold a piece of thing you're upholstering, pull the cloth around and get your fingers out of the way. The nail's on the end and you can just get a position like that and hold it in just roughly, first of all.
Find out where the edge is like that. Just hold it in roughly, trying to get all the wrinkles, so they're going to be smooth around. I haven't put anything in hard at all yet.
Okay. And you make sure everything is looking quite even. If it's not you, use the back and just these tacks.
You can see there's a big gap around the back. I haven't hammered it in all the way, and if you want to adjust it slightly, just pull it out. Put it back on the end.
When you're happy with the positions, you can put more tacks in there. You don't need that many. Then, hammer them home.
Then, put your nice cloth over the top. Carry on with that. So that's how to use this tack hammer. .
