How To Use An Orbital Sander
Learn how to use an orbital sander with this VideoJug presentation. Learn how to hold your sander properly, how to keep the work area dust-free, and what the different grades of sandpaper mean.
Now, I'm going to show you how to use an orbital sander. I've got three different types of sandpapers to show you - you've got a very rough one, medium, and fine. The very rough one is graded 60, and you've got 120 and 240, so the higher the number, the finer the finish is going to be.
So we'll start off with the 60. Put it on to the Velcro and align the holes so that the vac can suck out all of that dust. You'll see there's no dust when I'm sanding, which is great.
And so I'll get the rough bit done first. Okay, so you can see a big difference already there. There were some big undulations on this side that had started to go on that side, so we'll move up to 120.
We'll keep the sander nice and flat, and just keep in mind what areas you're sanding so you don't over sand one area than the other, but if you just go generally in one direction then the other, that's a safe way to cover the whole area. And now, to finish it off, we'll put a 240 grit grade sandpaper on there, align the holes, and there we are, we've got a beautifully smooth finish. You can actually feel a difference in the depth there, it's gone down so much with the three different sandpapers; it's very satisfying to feel.
And that's how to use an orbital sander. .
