How To Use Kite Killers

A guide to attaching and using kite killers to stay safe when power kiting.

Step 1: What are they?

Kite Killers are one of the best inventions in recent years in the world of power kiting. They allow you to break the kite at very short notice and still allow the kite to stay attached to you so you don't see it flying off into the distance as you fall on your backside and let go of the handles.

Step 2: How do they work?

Kite Killers consist of a wrist strap and one short line. By connecting one end of this to yourself and one to the kite, you can be sure to always stay attached to your kite no matter what the wind conditions. The line is slack enough not to stop the kite when you are happy flying but if you get into trouble and have to let go of the handles the line pulls taught and pulls the break line bringing the kite down.

Step 3: How do I fit them?

You need to attach the kite killers to your kite before strapping yourself in. The line from your killers is attached to the brake line of a normal 4 line kite. Make sure the killer lines are not too long causing them to tangle themselves or worse still get tangled in your clothing. The point of attachment should be pushed hard up against the knot where your kite lines fix to the handles. If fitted correctly the handles should fall forward when you let go of them and the kite should be nothing more than fabric blowing in the wind. Make sure the straps are secure around your wrists but not too tight you can't feel your hands.
