Petroleum-based and sewage sludge pesticides can carry dangerous chemicals that can harm your plants, the soil and your family. Here are some safe, organic alternatives that will help keep the bugs out of your bok choi.

Step 1: Egg Shells

You might see large holes eaten through your leafy green vegetables and garden plants. The slugs and snails have been busy.

To rid your garden of this slime once and for all, rinse off some egg shells and place them into a container and use a small garden tool to crush them into small pieces. Sprinkle the small pieces of egg shells all around the base of your plants and vegetables. Slugs don't like the texture of the egg shells and will stay away from your leafy greens.

Step 2: Ladybugs

Not only are aphids annoying, but they are known to carry many plant diseases.

If the aphids are chewing through your leafy greens, unleash the ladybugs! The average adult ladybug eats over 5,000 aphids.

Step 3: Compost

The best way to keep your garden pest-free is to make sure it's strong and healthy. Spread a natural, organic compost around the base of your plants and vegetables insures that your vegetables will taste great and remain chemical free.
