How To Use Swimming Flippers

In this video, Paul and Theo shows how to use flippers for swimming.

Hi I'm Paul. This is Theo from Swimminglessonslondon.co.uk

uk. We're going to give you a few tips on swimming today. You're more than welcome to contact us for any more information or to book a session.

Thank you. So now were going to talk about training aids and flippers in particular. Now, flippers can be used in a variety of situations, obviously on a holiday when you're going snorkeling or scuba diving because as they're very effective because they provide a lot more propulsion in stored kinetic energy inside the flipper.

Also, a lot more surface area contact, area of water contact I should say rather. A lot more propulsion can be gained by this, making a lot faster swim workout. What we're going to do is we're going to start with Theo swimming without them, just the legs kicking and were going to look at the difference they make for putting on flippers like these, mini flippers these ones.

And you'll see how effective they can be. Okay, so you see, although he's got a good leg kick, good technique. The legs aren't providing that much power, probably only about 20 to 25 percent power of the overall power of the stroke on the front crawl coming from the legs.

Now we're going to add some flippers. Okay so now were going to look at Theo with the swimming flippers on, and you'll notice he gets a lot more pace now from the legs. Notice there's a bigger action with the flippers.

The flippers can be generally used to encourage correct movement of the legs, as the stored kinetic energy results in the hips starting higher up in at hip. Using these incorrectly doesn't give you much propulsion at all, and actually feels clumsy and cumbersome. He's now using them for a butterfly.

So, both legs together, these fins were developed specifically for a butterfly. So in this case we use flippers to give people more power at the leg kick. Helping them get out of the water on the breath.

Flippers can also be used for scuba diving, snorkeling and for general fun on the beach as well. So you just want to think about what you're going to use the flippers for before you buy a pair. But, certainly they have many uses.
