Now, I'm going to talk to you about how to use the nasal cavity when singing. The nasal cavity is essential for generating something that singers call imposta, this is an Italian term that refers to the blade or ping on a sound. It's that kind of slight buzzing hard edge that sometimes singers have that helps it to go right to the back of a concert hall.

A really great exercise to help generate this is this one. That hum absolutely gets these nasal resonances buzzing. So, you start on a low note, slide all the way up to the high note end on the NG hum and then, just release it all and you should end up with a really, rich, open, resonant sound.

When you get higher up in the voice, you'll find that the larynx sometimes wants to rise. The larynx is that bit at the back of the throat and when it goes up, it'll sound a bit like this. You'll feel that tension at the back of the throat.

If that happens, stop, relax and try again and focus on maintaining that free open space inside the mouth. So, once you get the hang of this, you can open it up at other vowel sounds. A really useful exercise for this is to sing E, A, I, O, U vowels, all to 1 note, because the E vowel really lends itself to generating imposta nasal resonance.

And there you have a few tips on how to use the nasal cavity when singing.
