How to vacuum stairs perfectly

Hello and welcome to VideoJug. Stair cases are often over looked when it comes to cleaning. But feet constantly stomping up and down quickly leave their mark. Jacqueline Hansson, our expert from Amy Cleaners, is going to show us the best way to clean stairs.

Step 1: You will need

Step 2: Remove large pieces

Before you get vacuuming remove by hand any scraps of paper or larger dirt item which may clog you vacuum cleaner.

Step 3: Edges and corners

Remove the large attachment of the end of the vacuum, the smaller nozzle area is better for getting into the corners. Work your way up the stairs running the nozzle around the edges of each and every step. Make sure you press it right into the corner, this is the place where dust will settle.

Step 4: The steps

Return to the bottom of the step and replace the wide attachment. Run it back and forth over each step covering the entire area. Turn the attachment upside down and work it over the vertical part of the step. Use an up and down motion to ensure you cover every centimeter. Work your way up the stair case in the same manner. Vacuuming the horizontal,...then the vertical part of each step.

Great job Jackie.

you should go top to bottom because loose bits fall on to the lower step which get on your socks which get on the step you just hovered!!!, to the person who wants bum wiping tips, always check the paper after each wipe till the papers free from jiff!

I think each of the steps is described well, but I find them backwards, other than getting the big pieces picked up by hand - which does need to be first. I use the 'wide attachment' first, and start at the top, and then do the edges. My wide attachment has a rotor. As I'm doing a step, the rotor will sometimes fling a piece of sand or some such backwards, rather than being sucked into the vacuum. This bit of sand is going to land on a lower step - thus, if I could see it, I'd want to vacuum that lower step again. Starting at the top solves this problem. I know this happens - I've felt the sand hit my legs/feet. As for edging vs wide attachment first, when I'm using the wide attachment it will sometimes shove a piece of lint (or whatever) into the edge/corner.

I am over 55 years of age and like having a clean house because I'm one of those who see dirt and who needs to get rid of the eyesore. I live with a man who doesn't see dirt even though he makes lots himself e.g. leaving apple cores and tangerine seals everywhere, and popcorn in even more places. Anyhow, while researching how to get ink out of his brand new shirt, I came upon the vacuuming video and LEARNED new things in a simple calm way. Yay to you. Barbara
