How To Warm Up For Singing

Before singing, warming up ones' muscles in their chest and neck are actually equally important as warming up ones vocal chords. It is important to stand properly and relax before attempting to sing, especially if it is without the aid of a microphone.

Now, I'm going to give you a few tips on how you can warm up your voice. Singing is an extremely physical activity, especially if you sing without microphones, so it is very important to warm up and stretch those muscles, exactly as you would warm up your muscles before sport. If you do this, it helps to optimize the sound you make.

It is also very important to avoid straining your voice. Repeatedly singing without warming up can lead to vocal damage. Everybody's voice is different, and as you get to know your own voice, you will develop your own sequence of warm up exercises that you like, that suit the sound that you make.

But right now, I'm just going to give you a few general pointers; perhaps a start that you can build on. As singers, our bodies are our instrument, so it's important to make sure that they are relaxed and free. To start with, just roll your shoulders gently; particularly, roll them backwards because it has the by-product of opening out your rib cage as you do it.

When your shoulders are nice and free, start rolling your head. Roll it down, and then up to the side, and then to the other side, and then to the other side, etcetera, until you start feeling relaxed and free. Once you have done that, and any other stretches that you fancy, shake out, so just kind of release any tension that you have built up doing that.

Finally, align your posture for singing, so stand up straight but not rigid with your rib cage out, your pelvis forward, with your knees unlocked and your shoulders relaxed.
