During the 50's, many girls wear the prom dresses that we know now. They used to wear it with a cardigan if it was hot or without it. Prom dresses look really very cute.
Hi. I'm Zoe Lem, stylist and owner of My Sugarland and today, I'm going to give you some insider's tips of how to do fashion. I'm now going to show you how to wear a prom dress.
So, prom dress, 50's shape which is hourglass nips in at the waist and then balance out with the wide skirts which is really flattering and generally really great for most people. But you want to one, make sure you don't go too period drama and go completely vintage, and two, you want to make sure you get a good shape for your body shape. If you are hourglass, then you could go generally with the curves of the 50's shape.
If you're straight up and down or if you're pear shaped, then you need to make sure you bring the balance back in the shoulders. So, we've got the great dress, nipped in at the waist, the detail here on this one around the waist, because we want to give it a modern twist. You don't want it to be too vintage so that you look like you're from the 50's, it's doing inspired by the element of the outfit.
So, you want to bring the balance back in the shoulders, so we're going to do this great little vintage cardigan over the top. You don't want to go to matchy-matchy because then it looks a little bit too twee like a 50's housewife. You want to go cute but we want to give it a twist.
So, let's do the cardigan over the top so that adds the balance on the shoulders. We're adding a different tone of colour so that it's not all matching. We're picking up elements of those broaches and then we're going to do a contrast of colours.
So to give it a funky edge, we're going to do a red. So, we're going to mix up with the pink. So, you've got the red.
We're going for metallic because it really brings out that shine. Shine in any fabric is really flattering. It lifts the face and it's really brightening on the eyes.
So, do red shoes and then we're going to do a cute little red bag. So again, it's matching in the colour-wise but they're not matchy-matchy. You don't need a necklace because this is your necklace so we're just going have these.
So if you're wearing for a prom or an evening do, again, you'll balance the outfit with the vintage elements but no matching. If you want to add an alternative to the cardigan, want to bring in more of that red and a bit of that funky feel, then go for red on the shoulders and it ties in that red. Pink and red are great together, tones of the same colour really work and really liven up the pink because this can be draining for some people.
So, fab prom dress with a twist and this is how to wear a prom dress. .
