The wonderful thing about men's casual trousers is that there's so much choice.

You can choose from lots of different fabric types, from cottons, to cords, to denim, to moleskin. And it very much is down to a personal preference. So if you wanted to look very casual, and feel very relaxed, you may choose a casual trouser in denim.

If you wanted a slightly smarter look, you may decide to go for moleskin which is this and moleskin is basically brushed cotton. Sometimes moleskin has a viscous in it which gives it a bit of a lustre and a beautiful drape. So moleskin is a lovely smarter version, if you like, of wearing a denim trouser for casual look.

Also, cord as a casual trouser is lovely. And when you look at cord it can be a very fine cord, like this, which has a very close wear, or very close ribbing, or it can be thicker. Generally, if you have a finer wear cord, it is smarter, but if you want a casual wear cord which looks really relaxed then go for something with a thicker rib or a thicker wear.

If you want a relaxed look for the weekend, a nice alternative to denim is maybe a linen trouser. Linen can come in a hundred percent linen or a linen blend. And it does have a tendency to crease, so it does get that very deep, constructive, very casual look.

And linen's great to wear in the summer because it keeps you cool. Also, cargo pant is very relaxed. It tends to be in a slightly heavier cotton.

All the detailing on it really lends itself to something that you could wear on the weekend. And cargo pants looks great with trainers. A formal shoe with this kind of look doesn't work very well at all.

Cord-like denim comes in a five pocket western style, but you can also get cord in a very formal cut, so it's up to you how you want to wear your cord. You can wear it as an alternative to a jean, a jean style but in a different fabric, or you could wear it in a more formal shape, but with the cord material. Another style but in cotton trouser is the pinstripe.

So again, this is in the shape of a jean but as a pinstripe, it works really well and it's a nice take on wearing denim. Denim comes in lots of different weights and lots of different colors, and it has a lot of variation on the styling. So when you're thinking about denim, think about how smart you want it to be.

Generally, the darker denims lend themselves to a smarter look and the more washed, stonewashed looking denims lend themselves to a more casual look. The great thing about casual trousers is because they come in so many different fabric types, so many different colors, so many different types of styling, you can virtually wear a pair of casual trousers with anything you like. You can smarten it up by wearing it with a very smart shirt done up quite near the top of the neck or you could wear it with a nice piece of knitwear, you could wear it with a loosely constructed jacket.

It looks great with so many different things. There are no hard or fast rules. It comes down to your individual style and how relaxed you feel.

Generally, most people like to wear denim with a T-shirt, which is great for the summer, but if you wanted to wear the T-shirt in the winter you could layer it up with a nice piece of knitwear.
