How To Win Over Your Girlfriend's Dad

Step 1: Research

Preparation is the key. Ask your girlfriend about her dad. What does he do for a living? What interests does he have? Who is his favourite James Bond? Brush up on your knowledge of these, but don't try to become an expert - he will see through this immediately, just understand the fundamentals.

Step 2: Greetings

Always greet her father with a firm handshake. This shows you are mature and friendly, the right qualities for taking care of his daughter. Get used to calling him by his first name, putting you on 'friend' terms.

Step 3: Act comfortably

When you are around her father act assured and confident. He does not want his little girl to be going out with a push over. Be careful not to take this too far as you will appear arrogant. Speak clearly and don't avoid eye contact - this will give the impression that you either you are afraid of him, or even worse, have something to hide.

Step 4: Conversation

This is where your research comes in. Get the conversation going, drop in what you know about the subject but make it clear you keen to know more. Ask him questions and listen carefully, with interest, to the replies. He will be flattered by your enthusiasm and want to share his knowledge. You will soon be getting along famously.

Step 5: Treat your girl well

This is crucial. Act with nothing but respect towards her. Give her a protective hug or peck on the cheek in his presence, but never show any amorous affection. Even the hint that your intentions are less than honourable will be akin to waving a red rag at a bull.

It's not uncommon for father's to be over protective of their daughters, especially when it comes to dating. In these cases you must earn his trust;

Always obey his rules. Unless you are following his example, never drink, smoke or curse around him. Be on time, especially if your date has to abide to a curfew. Treat his concerns with respect and he will gradually begin to see what a fine, upstanding guy you are.
