How to work more effectively? Work effectiveness is a big challenge in this world where we all sorts of pressures on our time and all sorts of tantalizing distractions just waiting to pounce on our attention. These days more than ever, it's easy to spend hours doing without ever getting anything done. With that in mind, I'm going to share with you a very quick and very effective exercise to help you work more effectively.

I'm a strong believer that exactly what the average person doesn't need is another to-do list. In my experience, to-do lists either grow a mold if they're ignored or they can cause undue stress if they're actually listened to. The reason for that is that to-do list are all the things that we haven't done.

The only reward for completing the task is to not have that note annoying us every morning. And all the time, the habits that are really stopping us from working effectively are happily sneaking under the radar. Sure, to-do lists have their place but they won't increase our effectiveness at work.

So, what do I propose? The not to-do list! The not to-do list is a list of all of those things, specific or general, which you know you shouldn't be doing but you find yourself drifting into. Chances are that this is where a fair portion of where your productive day goes. Here is some classic example for your not to-do list.

See which ones resonate with you and add your own. Constantly checking emails, eating at my desk, emailing when I could pick up the phone instead, going online for a bit of research, keeping questions to myself without asking colleagues, jumping into my day panicking without planning, and saying yes when I really mean no. Once you have your not to-do list, read it through every morning and when you find yourself straying into the not to-do territory, just gently bring yourself back on track.
