How To Work With An Au Pair
It can be hard to create the right balance between using the au pair as a childcare provider whilst also giving her time to learn a new language and explore the country. Here is a guide to working with a new au pair.
Step 1: Settle them in
It will be quite daunting when the au pair firsts moves away from home. It is important that you help her settle in.
So, when they arrive, start off by showing them around the area. Make sure their room is ready so they know they will have their own space to relax.
Let them know what their weekly duties will be - it will make them feel more comfortable if they know what is expected of them.
Be friendly and caring so the au pair can understand that it will be a home away from home.
Step 2: Duties
Before your au pair starts, it is important that you make it clear what her duties will be. Do you want her to cook and clean or maybe pick the children up from school and help them with their homework. Remember, as part of her exchange programme, she will only be expected to work 5 hours a day in your home and have at least two days off.
Don't forget, that taking on an au pair is a great opportunity so take advantage of their skills.
Step 3: Ground Rules
Having someone move in with your family, will also be a big change for you. It will be a good idea to set some ground rules when the au pair first moves in - how do you feel about the au pair smoking, going out late or bringing friends back.
Make sure that you make your thoughts clear but don't be too strict - otherwise, they will only become homesick and want to go home.

This is a nice introductory video-- it lays things out quite simply.
