How To Write A Persuasive Letter

The video tells us about how to write a persuasive letter. It involves jotting down answers to three important questions: who you are writing to, what do you want them to and what they need to know for that to be in their interest?

In writing a persuasive letter, the preparation is just as important as writing the letter itself. So, before you begin to write the letter, take a clean sheet of paper and write down the answers to 3 questions. Those 3 questions are: who are you writing to? What do you want them to do? What they need to know in order for that to be in their best interest? So, under the 'who' question, write down what you know about the person you are writing to.

Remember, that you are not writing to an old school teacher, you are not writing to your parents, you are not writing to your worst critic, you are not writing to your best friend. You are writing to this one person and it's only them that you need to persuade. The second question is 'what'.

What do you want them to do? It's really important that you are extremely clear about that. Often, people aren't and it leads people into all sorts of problems. So the third point is, what do they need to know? Why is this in their interest? If you were them, why would you do it? Is it going to make money, is it going to be interesting, is it going to help with their career, is it going to help the business, is it going to be fun? Find out what it is and list all of those things.

Now, you come on to writing the letter and here is a very good idea often, to begin by telling them, what you would like them to do. Starting by telling the person what you want them to do, immediately results in loss of tension. It means that the letter doesn't seem as though it is a chatty piece of catching up or an explanation of something irrelevant.

They know exactly what sort of thing it is that they are reading. Starting by telling the person what you want them to do also shows that you are not ashamed of it & that's a very important point. Its important to show them that you thought this through from their point of view and that you think that it is in their best interest.

tell them that.

Make sure that they can see, that you are writing this letter to them is not a standard letter and then just list the reasons for them doing. This was my approach to writing a persuasive letter. .
