Let's dispense with formalities for a start. You never need to write “dear”. That's just a waste of space.
It's got their address on there. They know it goes to them, but don't forget to sign it and sign it in a legible way. We've all received postcards from John or Sarah and thought, “Blimey, which John or Sarah”? Next, don't put anything seriously personal on a postcard.
This is not an appropriate way of writing to sympathize with somebody on the death of a relative or something. A postcard is for public consumption so anybody can read it so you've got to bear that in mind. Next tip: make sure it's legible.
I remember receiving a lot of postcards over the years from people with long spidery scrolls and neither I nor my wife nor anybody else could decipher them. You're not the best judge of your handwriting so remember just to make it clear. Finally, keep it short and sweet.
It's the fact that you took the trouble to send a postcard and your choice of postcard that probably matters most. With most postcards you write on this side and you put the address on this side and the stamp here, but if you want to write something seriously personal remember that anybody can see a postcard. So if you want to do that cover the whole postcard with a personal message, then put it in an envelope and stamp the envelope.
