How To Write In Cursive
How to Write in Cursive Hand: A brief instructional demonstration on the method for writing cursive. This explains how first learning to write in italics can be the key to writing in cursive.
Hi I’ve Veiko from the Calligraphy Studio in London. When you have learned to do Italic handwriting it is quite easy to progress to cursive (joined) handwriting.
First measure up your letterforms to an x height of 5 nib widths and write out some letters, for instance i and n. When you have written your letterforms try to work out how the letters can be connected. Here the n connects to the i and the i connects to the n with a simple join. Practice joining the letters until you have a feel for how it is done. Then try different but similar letters, perhaps n and u.
When you have practiced most of the letters move on to writing words. Practice finding different ways of connecting these letters together and how that will change the appearance of the letterform. After this take a short piece of text and practice writing it a number of times.
Now we have practiced writing text attempt to write the same text with a larger and smaller x height to get a feel for how the joins will look. If you keep the pen at 45 degree angle you will find it easy to join the different letterforms.
