Insane Spy Mic
Turn a Wok lid or mixing bowl and an old mic from a broken PC or cellphone headset into a tight focus directional spy mic!

The basic components:
-
I have always liked those parabolic big ear mics used for picking up in-game sounds in football. They are very expensive, but here is how you can make your own that works incredibly well. An old wok lid works great because of its parabolic shape, but a large plastic or metal mixing bowl will also work. An old condenser microphone from a broken headset is ideal for this project.

Step 2:

Making the Spy Microphone:
-
I used a nail to make a hole in the side of the wok, then attached a 1/4 inch thick dowel rod with a screw. I then slid a large washer over the rod, super-glued it to the side of the wok, and used a hot glue gun for reinforcement, and then cut off the extra dowel. This gave me a very sturdy mouth for the microphone. I threaded the mic cord through 3/8 inch thick shrink tubing and slid this over the dowel. Once the microphone was aligned properly, I heated the shrink tubing for a tight fit, and my wok-rophone was ready for testing. I put a drum loop on my mp3 player and set it on the front porch and used nothing but the ear buds for a whisper-like sound.

Step 3:

Spy on your neigh...
-
With listening power like this, you could spy on your neigh... I mean listen to neat bird calls. Thanks for watching, and always take a little time for some fun.
