Intercepting The Ball
Welcome to the Videojug Soccer School, brought to you in association with the Brazilian Soccer Schools. In this film we show you some drills to improve your defending by intercepting the ball
As a defender the ability to read the game and to predict where the ball is going is as important as being a tough tackler. Reacting to where the ball goes will leave you chasing shadows so it's important to try and read the game. Predicting where the ball is going will lead to some vital interceptions.
Step 1: Intercept the pass
Two players should pass the ball to each other. Imagine a line between the passers and stand about two metres back from it ready to intercept the pass between them. It is important to anticipate when the ball will be kicked. If you react after the ball is passed you'll be too late and miss the interception.
Step 2: Get in front
This time the defender should be behind the man receiving the ball. The aim is for the defender to get in front of the defender and intercept the ball. Make sure you time it right or the defender might simply turn you. It's a matter of judgment when to intercept and when to jockey the attacker.
